Profile: When I first encountered these pearly shell-drops, I was watching the series “Drops of God,” or, “Les Gouttes de Dieu.” It’s a mélange of French, Japanese, and American storylines (based on a Japanese manga) that all merge and delve into the nuances of wine, from tradition to taste to the influence of “terroir” over its production. One of the characters holds a memory of watching a storm move in over the vineyards, with the raindrops showering the land and ultimately nourishing the grapes themselves, contributing to the final product just as much as any other step in the process of its making and enjoyment.
